why choose airbrush makeup?

Airbrush makeup is truly the most perfect technique for achieving flawless looking skin.

While many people have the impression that the airbrush is a relatively new tool in the field of makeup, airbrushed makeup was first used in the epic movie of 1925, Ben Hur, to assist the makeup artists in applying 600 gallons of body paint to an enormous cast of actors and extras in a limited time. Today, with the advent of digital cameras and HDTV, more makeup artists turn to the airbrush to take off the hard edge that pixelated images bring to skin texture. This skill was once considered a specialty, and now it has become a standard industry technique.

What are the advantages of airbrush make-up?

Though not a new technology, airbrush make-up is once again in the limelight due to the advent of evolving digital media, including Digital Photography and Hi-Definition Television. The precision application offered by airbrush make-up has two major benefits that stand up to the challenges presenting make-up artists today:

1. Full Coverage, Sheer Texture:
A true airbrush foundation is high in coverage, but thin in texture, offering a high-opacity or full coverage application that's dispersed as sheerly and evenly as possible. The result is perfect-looking skin acheived with a minimum of product.

2. Refined Pattern:
The spray dot-pattern the airbrush puts down on the skin registers less on camera than the patterns and trace lines that brushes and sponges leave behind. However invisible these marks may appear to the naked eye, they can be quite noticeable when your client's face is shown in Hi-Definition close-up or in a High Resolution Digital Photo.

While other advantages include speed of application, longevity, and durability, the true advantage of airbrush make-up is the beautiful finished result it produces.

In the following diagram you will see examples of the different results in makeup application techniques including makeup sponge, foundation brush & Airbrush.

Airbrush FAQs
1. What is Airbrush Makeup?
Airbrushing is a makeup application technique that utilizes compressed air through an “airbrush” (see picture at the top of this page), with pigments in liquid form eg: foundation, blush, highlighters and bronzers, to spray on a fine mist of makeup on to the skin. Most clients find the application technique soothing and since traditional brushes are not used during the process it is also the most hygienic makeup application technique.

2. How does it feel?
Airbrush makeup is exceptionally lightweight. Most clients say they feel as if they aren’t even wearing makeup.

3. What are the benefits of airbrush makeup?
Airbrush makeup provides flawless coverage by minimizing skin imperfections while giving skin a beautifully natural finished looking result. Airbrush makeup has incredible ‘staying power’ and clients note that their makeup stays looking perfect for hours and hours.

4. Does it cover tattoos, scars, etc?
Yes, when applied by a properly trained professional makeup artist airbrush makeup covers skin discolouration imperfections including tattoos, scars and bruises.

5. Is Airbrush Makeup right for everyone?
Water-based Airbrush makeup is suitable for women of all ages and every skin condition. Ideally the makeup used in an airbrush should be hypoallergenic and fragrance free. In fact “Airbrush Makeup” is the best choice makeup for today's 'High Definition' standard in television, photography & film. Silicone based airbrush makeup formulations are also used by some makeup artists (I don't) but sensitivity patch tests on the skin should always be carried out before applying to any client as it is said that some people show reactions. If you are booking a makeup artist for your special event, be sure to ask them what type of foundation they use for airbrush makeup application and ask for a skin sensitivity test if they use silicone based foundations.
